PONDERING PENTECOST “Where is your deep-down self”

Look who is at Waikanae River and taking pics on the way to the estuary.

There the river winds around a lot, cuts through a massive sand bar, and finally reaches the sea.

Part of some 100 km of walking tracks and cycleways on Kapiti Coast, and for horses too! It was Pentecost Sunday and I carry estuary images from a Retreat. Our Lady of Kapiti Parish had recently held the Retreat in Daily Life with Sisters of the Cenacle. We were offered prayer cards to help us ponder. One had a picture of a river working its way down to the sea. With reflections:

‘In the river’ by Sr Anne Powell:

And when you reach the turn in the river
stand back noting the bend a question mark
asking the whitebaiters where will you set your nets
and asking of you where is your deep-down self.

And you keep faith with the river by resting on a strong log
allowing the river to question you.
The river mirrors the sky and bares your soul.

On that card also by Anne Powell:

May the drift of the river carry you and the sandbank not block your journey.

And the ripening flax flower strengthen you and the breeze in the grass gentle you.

May the quiet river sing you peace.

On that card and headed ‘On Being Church Together’ from Pope Francis:

“Let the Church always be a place of mercy and hope,

where everyone is welcomed, loved and forgiven….

Do not be afraid to dream.”

Habbukuk 2: 3 is also on the card

“For still the vision awaits its appointed time….Wait for it, it will surely come.”

From Fr Peter:

There are special bends in the river of our lives,

waters often winding back on themselves refreshing us more.

Let us rest awhile on a strong log.

To ponder pentecost, not afraid to dream, ever awaiting new visions.

At times may ‘the breeze in the grass gentle you’.
