ST JUAN DIEGO AND THE APPARITIONS

From Cardinal Burke in his website presenting the Nine Months Novena invoking the Intercession of Our Lady of Guadalupe: Two important background documents.

The first is from Saint Juan Diego’s own account of his encounter with the apparition. The story was written by Antonio Valeriano. It is entitled The Nican Mopohua which are the opening words translated into English as Here is told. If read slowly and meditatively it comes through as the truly spiritual revelation it has been declared to be.

Almost as if one is accompanying St Juan Diego himself! That was my experience.

The second Cardinal Burke document describes the context, background and style of Antonio Valeriano’s story Nican Mopohua.

It is entitled Don Antonio Valeriano: Literature as a Messenger of the Mother of God. It is a scholarly essay, and as a reader I had to take it piece by piece in order to digest it properly.

The reader is alerted to what was happening in those days between the Spanish and the Native peoples, particularly between Franciscan Missionaries and ordinary Mexicans, and how God intervened, sending His Mother to be Our Lady of Guadalupe.
